When we bought the land of Embiara Lodge in 2000, there was no infrastructure whatsoever. When we decided to build a homestead on our land (which would later become the lodge), we worked hard to ensure that there was minimum impact on the natural surroundings. To bring electricity from outside, we used special transmission lines that could be brought through the forest without having to fell a single tree.
The main lodge building provides a welcoming and relaxing space in which our guests can enjoy a drink before dinner, peruse the internet or read a book. It consists of a large living room area with comfortable sofas, a variety of books about the wildlife and culture of the Pantanal, a computer with internet and wifi (at no extra charge), and a spacious, mosquito-netted terrace again with comfortable seating for putting your feet up and enjoying your Pantanal surroundings.
The dining area is in a separate building, which sits beside the main lodge building. This has a barbecue or just a cosy fire. The dining area has panoramic views of the fields and forests that surround us. It is not uncommon for us to be interrupted during our meal by one of our wild animal friends, such as a busy, foraging armadillo, or a forest-dwelling tapir. We feel that it is important for guests to try traditional Brazilian dishes, but we also love to serve our guests dishes from all over the world.
There is a lit, wooden walkway between the main lodge building/dining room area and our 3 stand-alone guest chalets.
Two of the chalets are suites with an individual surface area of 80m2, and the third larger chalet contains two separate suites with an adjoining living room which is accessible by both suites, but if requested, can be isolated for the exclusive use of one of the suites. All suites have their own private, mosquito-netted terrace and seating area and a comfortable sofa bed that can be converted to sleep up to two children comfortably in individual twin beds. The interior of each of the suites has climate control, a "split" air conditioner and a ceiling fan. The terraces of all 3 of the chalets have views over a field, which becomes a lake in the flooded season. This field is visited by all sorts of curious creatures including peccaries, anteaters, macaws and even jaguars.
The rooms and terraces are a perfect place to relax at the end of the day.
Thanks to the lodge's proximity to a vibrant river (Rio Negro) and a bustling forest, there are always unexpected animal visitors passing through. Red and green macaws might be picking at the nuts of a palm tree beside the main lodge building, or there could be a group of noisy, grunting white-lipped peccaries wandering inquisitively through the field.
