Walking is one of our favourite morning activities. After an early breakfast, you will head out with an experienced guide on one of the numerous different trails which emanate from our lodge. One of these trails will take you through the cool mangrove type forests situated beside the Rio Negro. Here, you will find water holes and oxbow lakes fed by seasonal flooding of the Rio Negro. Little light penetrates this area, so there is practically no ground vegetation, and the trees are twisted and gnarled as they search for the elusive sky. This is a cool and comfortable place to walk, and there is always a surprise. Animals also enjoy these cool and sheltered conditions, so it is not uncommon to encounter on our walk a resting tapir or a foraging red brocket deer. We have special field guides who have spent their entire life in the Pantanal and surrounding regions, and therefore have a vast knowledge of the flora (and its medicinal properties) and fauna here. |
