Giant Anteater visit

These winter months are often a good time for seeing giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla). Giant Anteaters belong to a small group of mammals which do not have any teeth. instead using hard growths in their mouth and a muscular stomach for grinding down the insects which it consumes. Giant anteaters have a very good sense of smell, but do not see or hear well. They have very strong forearms, and sharp claws for breaking open ant and termite colonies.

We spotted this anteater digging for ants in the ground beside a fallen tree. Because we were downwind from the anteater, we were able to approach quite close to it without it being aware of our presence...
